If I was to put an umbrella title to my artistic practice I would choose ‘Fragmentation’. Whether it is fragments of movement, digital fragmentation of images extracted from photographs I have taken, fragments of imprints on clay or fragments of domestic objects taken out of the context of my home, my work can be seen as a composition of fragments. When I choose to use an image or an object I do not choose it for what it represents but for its possibility as a fragment of a composition, its colour, shape and texture. This process excites me because it can be revealing to me, my starting point can be quite accidental but when I finish it is a conscious decision of completion. Abstraction helps me in this process. My first medium was photography and then painting became my main interest. Maybe because I grew up surrounded by my grandmother’s abstract paintings, it came very naturally to me to start with abstract compositions rather than representational studies. I see my paintings as abstract coalitions of signs, shapes, strokes, and colours and when I started exploring other mediums like sculpture, installation and even sketching, I enjoyed applying the same approach. In my painting, I often prefer to use the colours as they come out of the tube rather than mixing them before I apply them on the canvas, a bit like using found objects to create an installation or instances found in photographs to create digital images. Within this process, I often like to use repetition and layering to create patterns which can then be retained or deconstructed.
